Books like *Germinal* by Emile Zola?

I feel like Frank Norris’s *McTeague* is pretty heavily influenced by Zola. Honestly, why not just read more Zola since he wrote so much of it? I think *L’/The Earth* in particular is really good.

I just realized my reading list is basically all American authors lately, and I really want to change that and get some more diversity in there. Any suggestions for great international classics? Like British, European, Asian, anything really. Drop as many as you want. Edit: wow, this picked up way more attention than I expected—thanks for all the suggestions!

This feels like a pretty intense look at class warfare in the 1800s—miners up in northern France trying to get organized and build a union. I don’t know, it really comes across as a straight-up struggle of the proletariat more than anything else in the film.

Just wrapped up this massive book... Thoughts: - Really enjoyed the characters. They had a lot going on and the arcs were strong. - I was into the class struggle / anti-bourgeoisie angle, but I feel like the flood sabotage and survival parts maybe didn’t need to be there. Has anyone else read it? What did you make of it? And what are you reading while stuck inside?
