Reader discussion: My Father's Dragon

Public reader discussion about My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett.

For a seven year old who likes adventure and fantasy stories that aren’t scary.

My kid is 7 and her reading is around a 4th–5th grade level. I’m trying to find books that are fun but not emotionally too much for her. She’s liked: - Unicorn Academy - Boxcar Children - The Secret Zoo (some parts were kind of scary, but she still ended up liking it overall) - Junior B. Jones - Ivy and Bean - Dog Man - Captain Underpants - Lemonade Wars But Impossible Creatures was a little too scary for her. We also tried The Hatchet—read a bit of the first chapter—and that felt too scary again. We tried some of Narnia and The Hobbit too, but she thought both were kinda boring/slow, so we didn’t get very far. Also, I’m thinking she’d probably love a “choose your own adventure” style book, as long as there aren’t too many scary endings.

Grief and reading

Sorry for your loss. I lost my brother too, and honestly I’m really struggling to read right now. It feels kind of silly, but the only stuff I can really get through is children’s books. I just finished Poppy and it was genuinely sweet. If anyone has recommendations for kid chapter books that might be easier to handle while I’m feeling like this, I’d really appreciate it—especially ones that don’t deal with death. Thanks in advance.
