Who is the best storyteller of all time?
By MuddySong92
I feel like there’s a pretty big difference between being a great writer and being a great storyteller, even if a lot of top authors are good at both. Like, a good writer to me is more about the actual sentence stuff—smart prose, strong vocabulary, being able to shape sentences really nicely, playing with language, all that. But a good storyteller is more about the whole experience: characters that feel real, pacing that doesn’t drag, themes that actually hit, dialogue that sounds right, etc. Honestly, that matters more to me. I read a lot of translations, so you kinda lose some of the pretty prose stuff no matter what, but the story itself is still there. For instance, Crime & Punishment—at least in translation I’ve read—feels a bit simpler in terms of style, but the character work and psychology are basically a masterclass. So yeah… who’s the best storyteller you’ve ever read?
