Reader discussion: The Wind in the Willows
Public reader discussion about The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.
Anyone remember Cosgrove Hall Films’s Wind in the Willows?

Yeah, definitely with a lot of affection. Most of the David Jason ones like this were pretty witty and funny, but also had that warm, feel-good vibe. And once you throw in Michael Hordern, Peter Sallis, and Richard Pearson, it just feels like a proper British voice acting showcase. Really awesome.

I was slogging through a book I wasn’t really getting into, and then it mentioned the Green Man. That got me curious, so I looked him up and saw he also shows up in *The Wind in the Willows*. I’ve wanted to read that for ages, so I finally started it.
I’m only in chapter one, but wow—this is genuinely beautiful and kind of deep. It feels lyrical, like it’s got that Lewis-ish vibe, and there’s this misty, magical Tolkien sort of feeling too. I’m in my 50s and somehow I’m sitting here all caught up and dreamy because of a children’s book. It’s weird, but it also makes me feel like… life really is beautiful.

I’m kind of obsessed with Folio Society stuff, it’s so good.
Do you wait for a certain time of year to read books with a seasonal setting?

One of my favorite winter reads is *The Bear and the Nightingale* by Katherine Arden. I really like the whole Russian folk tale/myth vibe, and it’s definitely stuck in this super freezing kind of setting.
I was chatting with a friend and they said they can’t stand reading books with a cold winter vibe once it’s below freezing where they live—they just want something set in the tropics in winter so they can pretend they’re not dealing with gloomy days and dirty snow.
Do you ever think about that, or do you just grab whatever sounds good no matter the weather?
