One for primary school teachers or parents with similar experiences - should I be encouraging my 3 yr 4 month old to read or should I wait until she starts school?
By martenepilogue
My daughter has always loved reading time, ever since she was really small. I grabbed the Oxford Learning Phonics cards and she took to them straight away. Then I got the Julia Donaldson Songbirds phonics book (stage 1) and now she’s starting to read the bits on her own. My MIL said I shouldn’t be encouraging it because she’ll get bored once she starts school, and that this is something teachers with experience should handle. But she can write her name and do numbers too, and she’s doing really basic adding and taking away. Should I stop though? I’m honestly not forcing it on her—she just really enjoys it, and I just wanted to support what she’s interested in. I’m just worried it might mess with what she needs for education. She’s not starting reception until September next year and she only goes to nursery one day a week. Also, I’m really overwhelmed by all the comments and tips I’ve had—everyone’s been so helpful. Going to carry on and have fun with it.
