I picked this up because it came out in 2008, and people were calling it this “techno-countercultural” thing and saying it basically tries to spread subversive ideas to younger folks. The plot is kind of intense: after a terrorist attack in San Francisco, the Dept of Homeland Security uses it as an excuse to start rounding up gamers, interrogating them, and monitoring them. Then a group of teenagers tries to fight back, and the DHS ends up detaining and torturing them. They do get rescued in the end, and the agents get arrested, but I can’t help feeling like that part is pretty naïve compared to how things seem now.
