A Tale of Two Cities: Book the First Chapter One

By Panther7

Just jumping into this read-along for *A Tale of Two Cities* (Charles Dickens). Quick rundown: each day there’ll be a post for whatever chapter we’re on, usually around 01:00 GMT, unless I mess up or something about the scheduling goes sideways. There are a few prompts, but you can basically talk about whatever’s in the chapter (or the book) up to where we are now. And yeah, please don’t drop spoilers for stuff coming later—seriously. Anyway, here we go! **Discussion prompts:** - This is a pretty short chapter to start us off, and we’re straight into that super well-known opening line. Did the wording feel easy to read and kind of great, or are you thinking maybe Dickens could go a bit lighter on the fancy prose? - We get a snapshot of what France and England are like at the time. Based on how it’s described, where would you actually rather live? - Is this your first time with Dickens? We’ve done one before—*A Christmas Carol* for Christmas week 2020, so that was our first read. If you want background, there’s some biographical stuff on Wikipedia. - Anything else you want to bring up? Tomorrow’s chapter’s longer, so hopefully we’ll get more plot instead of just world building. **Links:** Project Gutenberg Standard eBook Librivox Audiobook **Final line:** … along the roads that lay before them.
