Are the lost mines of King Solomon a real legend, or did H. Rider Haggard make them up?

I read that ancient miners in Michigan pulled up something like half a billion pounds of copper over thousands of years. Not sure if it’s actually Solomon’s mines or whatever, but mining in general definitely isn’t some brand-new thing. Edit: this was Isle Royale and the Keweenaw peninsula.
