Anyone knows if Zorro is public domain?

I’ve been thinking about writing a script using the whole Zorro legacy, but I wanted to check if it’s public domain first since I kind of assumed it was. I went down the rabbit hole with a few articles and now I’m honestly not sure at all. I’m hoping someone else knows more about the actual legal/public-domain status and can point me in the right direction.
