A Simple Story

I’m reading Elizabeth Inchbald’s “A Simple Story” — I’ve got the 1988 Oxford World Classics edition. It says it’s the original 1791 text, and I believe it, since there are a bunch of old/strange grammar choices and the beginning has notes that explain them. But I’m stuck on something that the notes don’t really answer: there are these small notes at the bottom of certain pages. They aren’t footnotes (they don’t point to anything on that page), and they start in the notes section at the beginning and then keep going through the book. They look like some kind of numbering—something like “S. S.” with numbers going from 2 up to 15. Sorry if I’m not describing it super clearly, but I can’t figure out what they’re for.
