Reader discussion: Captain Salt in Oz

Public reader discussion about Captain Salt in Oz in the WeRead Catalog by Ruth Plumly Thompson.

TIL: In the original story of the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy wore silver slippers to protect her from the Wicked Witch of the West, but this was changed to Ruby Slippers in the 1939 film to take advantage of the new Technicolor process

I keep hearing folks say it’s basically a Populists thing—silver shoes on a gold road and the whole silver/gold standard vibe. The Witch of the East is supposed to be some kind of industrialist, and then the Tin Man is the industrial worker while the Scarecrow is a farmer. And the Lion… I’ve seen people connect it back to William J. Bryan like you said. Oz is even treated like the government, and on and on. Even though the family insists it’s not, it seems like historians just can’t resist talking about it.

There needs to be more adaptations of original Land of Oz books.

Like seriously, there are so many takes on Wizard of Oz it’s crazy: - An unofficial sequel (Return to Oz) - An unofficial origin movie (Oz the Great and Powerful) - A Black retelling (The Wiz) - A Tom and Jerry version of the 1939 movie - A Muppet retelling of Wizard of Oz - And even some non-canon AU origin fanfic for the Witch (Wicked)
