Suggest me a book that captures an important part of your country's history through an eyes of an individual!

I’m fine with fiction or non-fiction, even autobiographies—I just want something that gives a real, detailed look at a time in your country’s history, told by someone who actually lived through it. The one I keep thinking about is “My Happy Days In Hell” by George Faludy. It’s basically him getting out of Hungary before it slips into Nazi control, then bouncing to other places because he can’t stand being away, and then eventually being sent to a forced labor camp. What really sticks with me is the way it talks about why people were locked up and tortured—just a brutal reminder that real life can be way worse than anything made up.
