Phoenixes feel like they always get treated as just another random magical creature in a lot of fantasy stories, and that’s kind of disappointing. They’re probably my favorite myth creature after dragons. I don’t really care what format it is, but I usually lean toward books and games. Does anyone know of any series/media where phoenixes actually matter a lot? And also anything where the main character is a phoenix, or there’s a close connection to one?

I’m trying to become a kids’ book writer, so I’m working on reading a bunch of children’s classics and newer books from around the world. Mostly for research, and honestly I’d love recommendations—your favorites, especially ones that aren’t super well known. I’m particularly into chapter books. I just finished Totto-Chan, which is a Japanese classic, and I really liked it.

I just reread The Phantom Tollbooth for the first time since fourth grade, and I swear it went way over my head back then. I’ve always loved The Wizard of Oz and I end up rereading it pretty often. I’m trying to find something else with that same kind of whimsical, magical vibe—almost like it’s simple on the surface but there’s more going on the longer you stare at it. I read The Neverending Story and liked it, but it didn’t fully hit the spot. Alice in Wonderland got closer, but not exactly. Any suggestions?
