Just started reading “The Call of Cthulhu”...

That first-page paragraph already pulled me in. The whole idea that our brains can’t really connect everything, so we just kind of stay on this calm little “island” instead of getting lost in the bigger, darker stuff… it’s a little creepy but also really effective. I’m not totally sure how I feel about the way it talks about science somehow being risky, but the vibe is strong—like someday we’ll put the pieces together and it’ll be too much, either driving us insane or pushing us to hide in a new dark age.

Last Call by Tim Powers

Last Call by Tim Powers is the kind of Vegas friendship story where the main guy doesn’t even want to be involved, but somehow he’s thrown into this occult power struggle—poker, Tarot, all of it. It’s got that tense, high-stakes desert noir vibe with a ton of weird, memorable characters. I thought it was really dazzling, and I ended up liking the two sequels just as much. Even as a standalone though, it absolutely works.
