Why is red hair ugly?

I just started reading *Anne of Green Gables*, and I’m on the part where Anne gets introduced and the neighbor lady basically calls her ugly right away. From what I can tell, it’s mostly because of her red hair. I’m not white, so I’m honestly confused about why hair color would be such a big deal. Was this just cultural bias from back then? Or is there still some kind of prejudice like that today? I get that some people might not like freckles, but I don’t understand why red hair would be seen as “repulsive” or anything.
