Other great 19th century novelists/novels?

By ButtonBlue62

Lately I’ve been really getting into 19th-century novels, and it feels like that’s where the novel kind of peaked for me. I’ve loved a bunch from that era—American stuff by Howells, British authors like Trollope and the Brontës (and I’ve also enjoyed George Gissing and Scott), and French writing too (I’m reading Balzac for the first time now, but I still haven’t gotten to Zola). I’ve also read Spanish authors like Pérez Galdós and Blasco Ibáñez, and I’m planning to pick up a couple things by Eça de Queirós soon. Only thing is, I haven’t read enough Russian lit from the 19th century—mostly just some Gogol and Lermontov when I was younger. Anyway, does anyone have good recommendations for 19th-century novels and authors? I’d especially love Europe and the Americas beyond the usual names. I’ll mostly be reading in translation, unless it was originally written in English or Spanish. Thanks!

What are some books that I should have in my library that is worth reading again and again and worth having a personal copy

Honestly, I feel like it could be classics, philosophy stuff, or even self-help books—ones that you end up needing to reread again and again.

Books about priests, pastors, or churches

Honestly I’m into basically anything—faith crises, doubts, slice-of-life stuff—just not the usual standard Christian fiction or whatever. And I guess nuns too… I didn’t mean to forget nuns.
