Re: The Golden Compass/His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman

I’m pretty sure these books don’t get called the best YA fantasy series of all time mainly because if you try to actually explain what’s going on, you end up sounding totally unhinged. Like with Harry Potter or Percy Jackson you can just say “there’s a magic school” or “Greek gods are real and they’ve got magical kids” and everyone’s like, okay, cool. But with His Dark Materials it’s more like… “It’s kind of a Paradise Lost-type thing but it’s also about humanity’s original sin, except it’s in some alternate world where your soul is a shape-shifting animal until you reach puberty, and there’s this girl with a compass covered in symbols, and then there’s a polar bear king who’s basically a warrior…” and then you can basically feel people backing away. I’ve tried giving people the short version of the themes and plot a bunch of times, and the closest I can get is “just read it for the vibes.” If anyone has a summary that doesn’t sound like you’re losing it, I’m genuinely curious how you describe it to other people.
