Old Sci-fi as archeology of science.

I just finished Hal Clement’s *Needle* (1949), and a big thing that stuck with me was how the book talks about viruses. Clement seems like he’s smart and careful, but the way he treats viruses doesn’t really match what we think of them as now. Back then, Watson and Crick hadn’t figured out DNA yet, so I guess most people wouldn’t’ve really known that viruses are basically genetic material that commandeers a cell’s stuff to make more of themselves—at least not unless you were in the very top layer of biochemical research. There are a few other parts of the book that feel dated because science and tech have moved on, but the virus discussion is what really got my attention. I’ve noticed I kind of like reading older sci-fi because it’s like a little record of how our understanding changes over time. Does that sound totally weird, or do other people enjoy spotting these kinds of shifts too?

I’m really into a bunch of older retro sci-fi stuff—PKD, Harrison (Stainless Steel Rat), Lester del Rey, that kind of thing. I’d love to jump into a bigger multi-book series I can listen to though. Anyone have any good recommendations?
