Andre Norton - best book to try for the first time?

By VolumeBrush

Hey all, Is anyone here a big Andre Norton fan? I got pointed to some stuff from The Portalist and it sounded really interesting—stuff like the Zero Zone and that Sargasso of Space vibe. I’ve heard her name around, but I don’t think I’ve actually read anything of hers. One thing though: I keep hearing she’s basically YA, and I’m a little hesitant because of that. Is it really aimed at teens, or is it more “YA-ish” and still good for adults? If I do dive in, what should I start with—best series or a standalone that’s a good first taste? Thanks!

Short stories that blew your mind.

I brought up “Hell is the Absence of God” in a different thread because it’s one I can’t shake. I’d also put Walter Jon Williams’ “Video Star” and George Alec Effinger’s “Breakaway” on that kind of “stuck with me” list. I’m 56, and I usually prefer short stuff. I’ve been into sci-fi since the late ’70s, so I’m sure I’ve read some of the usual recommendations, but I’d still love to hear everyone’s top short story picks. If you’ve got any favorites that are more under-the-radar, throw them at me—I’m hoping to find a few I haven’t seen.
