Suggest me a book that's like the film The Lodgers

I’m always into haunted house/mansion stuff, and I ended up really liking The Lodgers. Also, I’d rather not have any animal cruelty in it—if that happens, it totally ruins it for me.

I’d love some recommendations for novels written by women between 1820 and 1922 (basically Victorian-ish, but stopping at 1922 so they’re public domain). I feel like I’ve already read a lot of the big names (Austen, Gaskell, the Brontës, Von Arnim, Montgomery, Alcott, Elliott, etc.), so I’m hoping for something I haven’t run into yet. I’m usually in the mood for happier endings—stuff with comedy, mystery, and maybe a romance on the side. I don’t really like the super stereotypical Victorian melodrama with lots of fainting, constant sternness, and people dying of consumption. Any ideas?

I don’t really read a lot anymore, but I’m still super into the mystery stuff (honestly more in games than books lately). I figured I should catch up on some older novels I missed, so I started going through the Sherlock Holmes stories and I’m about halfway through the whole collection. After that, I wanted a break from Holmes for a bit, so I picked up Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None.” Now I’m in the mood for more classic mysteries—any recommendations?

I’ve talked enough about overrated books, so now I’m curious about the other side—stuff that doesn’t get much hype. Tell me what you’ve got, like lesser-known reads that deserve more attention.
