What are your favorite obscure classics?
By BenLovesBooks
I really like digging into older “classic” stuff, and lately I’ve been wanting to find some that aren’t the usual picks. I’m especially into Victorian or gothic-ish books, but honestly I’m good with anything that’s more than 100 years old. When I say “obscure,” I mostly mean one of two things: either it’s by someone who’s kind of forgotten, or it’s a lesser-known book by an author people already know. Like, stuff such as *The Count of Monte Cristo*, *Jane Eyre*, or *Frankenstein* doesn’t count as obscure, and neither does anything that usually shows up in high school reading lists or whose title you basically recognize instantly. Something like *The Tenant of Wildfell Hall* or *The Mysteries of Udolpho* feels more like a gray area to me. And I’d probably put *The Marble Faun* and *Two on a Tower* more firmly in the “pretty obscure” camp. Also—if you’re recommending translations, I’d love to know which translation you read. Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions! I’m pretty excited to check out a few of them.
